charitable competition

Anybody remember the million dollar pixel page? I remember seeing that page and thinking what utter genius. And wow, did it spawn a ton of futile knock-offs. I had my own idea spawned by that site.

The idea was to have a site comprised of a field of quadrants that is dedicated to a rivalry. The quadrants would be a reasonable size (not the 10X10 pixel, like on the milliondollar page). Visitors could contribute an amount (any amount that can be electronically transmitted) to a quadrant (or spread it across a number of quadrants) with a designation of where the contribution would go (to one rival or the other). Depending on how much money had been contributed from one rival or the other, one picture segment or another would be exhibited. The segment would be one portion of an overall larger picture and the object of rivals donating would be to expose all the segments related to their side before the other rival did. Once all the segments for one side were exposed, that rival faction would own that e-turf for the year. The process would repeat the following year.

To ensure that the turf wasn't won in a blitz donation right off the bat, a restriction could be in place where the turf would have to be held for a period of time before it is considered won and the period of time would diminish each month until around September when the holding period restriction was lifted. This would make it harder to own the board outright earlier on but it would get easier as time passed. Obviously, my objective would be to keep the donations flowing as long as possible, but not make it so unreasonable that people stop donating.

The overall larger pictures could be images that would incite the rival to donate if for no other reason than to ensure that _________'s ugly mug was covered up or to put so & so in the rival's colors.

The monies would go to the rival institutions (with maybe a small portion withheld for administrative fees). Additional funds could be generated with sponsored hover-over pictures (relative to the sponsor).

I don't know if the idea has any merit, but it seemed like a neat idea at the time. Especially the idea of scoring suite seats to rival football games so I could present a check at halftime to the institutions.
